What is ALA? - Oldest and most influential professional organization for librarians
- Promotes information literacy and high quality of information
- National conference is in Chicago next year, get a discount if you are a member
- Student dues are $30 per year
Why should I Join the IU Student Chapter? - Usually have speakers or events at monthly meetings
- Easy way to transition into national ALA
- Dues - lifetime $10 membership
- Student to Staff – essay contest, best essay gets a paid trip to ALA
- Exec board
- elections are at the end of December
- looks good on your resume
- Meetings are open, but events may not be
- Get involved, because we can only be as good as our members
Membership · We ask that you consider joining the National ALA, but it is not required to join us · To join: o Fill out a membership form with a check and place it in the ALA mailbox o Forms are available on our website (www.iuala.org) · You should join if you want to put ALA-SC on your resume DLC (Digital Literacy Contest) - 9/30, 7-8:30 pm W302
- Open to undergraduates – they have 30 minutes to answer 50 questions on the internet
- Sponsored by IU Libraries, ALA
- Results will help librarians see how students are searching for information
- Members can attend if they would like to observe
Newsletter - Comes out approximately every month
- Members write articles
- Can sign up if you are thinking about writing an article
- Good to get practice getting published
Fundraising - ALA flair - $1 each, 4 for $3
- Tote bags – designed by Stacey, available by the end of the month
Mentorship - Pair a first year student with a second year student
- Can talk to someone who has been here for awhile
- Taking names of mentors and mentees
- Have informal meeting at a coffee shop to get to know your mentors later on in the year
- To sign up, fill out a form, which is available in the SLIS Commons
Listserv - Sign up to receive notifications about events and meetings
- Email Rebekah to be added
Facebook group - Contains a job list, event notifications
Social committee - Set up events for the membership
- Accepting ideas for events (email Sarah)
- Wine and cheese
- Need a wine and cheese committee
